    Description

Chinese Qing dynasty genre painting on silk with figures in a garden setting illustrating a scene from the Chinese novel "Dream of the Red Chamber."  The painting depicts one of Bao Yu's maids, Qing Wen, who delights in tearing up fans.  Bao Yu had genuine affection for all the female members of his household, including the maids.  His response to Qing Wen's destruction of the fan was to encourage her to tear up more of them while the two laughed together, referring to the old saying "money can't buy a smile."  The painting is nicely framed in a solid antique hardwood frame.  19th century.  The frame measures 25” x 10 1/2" x 1” (plus hanger).  The visible image size is 22 1/2" x 8 1/8.”  The painting has not been examined out of the frame but appears to be in good overall condition.  There are water stains at the bottom that blend in well with the rockery and foliage.  The painting is possibly mounted to a backing.  A card on the back of the frame indicates it was originally purchased in Savannah, Georgia at a rug gallery and antique shop that had been in business since 1968.  From a Phoenix, Arizona collection.
